Levelling Considerations

Fiction - Folk Tales:

  • We have taken into consideration the size of font, length of text, very clear illustrations, and the way that the illustrations strongly support the text.

  • Superficially the texts are comparatively easy to decode, but there are underlying complexities of concepts which challenge understandings. Children will need to problem-solve to understand deeper meaning.

Non-fiction - Country/Culture Extension Collection:

We have taken into consideration a range of factors:

  • maps, diagrams, flow charts, graphs

  • poetry

  • matching of text and illustration

  • place names

  • political inferences

  • the directness of the link between fiction and non-fiction

  • complexities of language

Overall level:

The overall level given for each book is the higher of the two levels. The teacher's knowledge of the differences in levelling between the two sections of the books will allow them to provide selected challenges for students. Teachers may also like to use the Folk Tales independently of the Country/Culture Extension Collection.
